Mike began his construction career at an early age, working on projects with his father. His earliest experience, at the age of five, was a foundation repair. He helped by digging around it and applying the foundation coating. (Probably applying more to himself than the foundation.) By the age of 10, he was helping to lay out roofs and install shingles. At the age of 12, he was helping with and installing siding. At 14, he was laboring on masonry block, brick and concrete. By the age of 20, he was foreman of a construction crew, performing such tasks as framing, outside trim, siding and roofing.
He spent the next several years as a foreman or superintendent learning to be a hands on tradesman and craftsman.
Mike spent six years in middle and high school in industrial arts classes (shop class). He also had two years of drafting and architecture. He later attended college and received a BA in Business Administration.
Mike has built log homes, conventional homes, commercial projects, supervised large subdivisions, large commercial projects, worked on roads and bridges. Mike's experience in construction is 75% residential and 25% commercial.
Mike went on to start his own construction business in Virginia where he was a General Contractor and still is a Virginia licensed building contractor. I have a foot in Virginia and one in North Carolina. I was stick building houses in in 1988 as a class B in Virginia attained my class A builders license in 1990. Then in 1994 I toured a modular factory. ModUKraf. The next speculation home I built was a modular home in Rockingham county. I stick build but modular homes are a great value and I have them built to my personal sight built specifications. I have taken the current exams for Virginia class A in 2010.
Mike holds residential and commercial building contractor licenses in North Carolina and Class A builders license in Virginia. Mike also has a class A heavy highway license for Virginia. Mike could go back and get his North Carolina home inspectors license which he put on inactive staus because "I am busy enough building". Many of the exams for these licenses requires a lot of knowledge. The NC home inspectors license exam is a 4 hour exam encompassing home construction systems going back 150 years. 200 questions no open books. They will put 15 questions into one question. 4 hours. 50% failure rate. My test score was a above average is all I will say close to a engineers score, who teaches the continuing education for home inspection.
I passed all exams never failing one. NC commercial and residential, Virginia class A: 4 exams, and NC home inspector.
I have built in many parts of the country from the Mountains of Virginia, Eastern NC to East Coast Hurricane codes to building on bentonite in the Rocky Mountain region.
Building codes I have been familiar with over the years: SBC, CABO, BOCA, UBC, IBC, IRC and others. I am considering attaining a west virginia builders license. I can also easily attain South Carolina and Tennessee building licenses.
I'll build it to last and build it right.
I am here to offer his quality construction and pride in workmanship. He wants you to be happy in your new home. He builds homes, not just projects. He understands that this is quite possibly the largest investment that you will be making in your lifetime. He will build a house that you and your family can relax in and enjoy for years to come.
In Mike's opinion,"With my past experience as a site stick builder, I think the best future of building is with systems engineered houses. Systems engineered houses can be like cars, the quality varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. Materials used in the construction of the homes can vary from builder to builder. A good builder is still needed to build these houses, there is a lot of work on site to be completed. A Modular is only as good as the builder erecting it!"
